A Babywearing Workout

This babywearing workout targets the lower body and can be done at home while wearing your little one! Perfect for those busy days when you can’t make it to the gym.

This post is part of my partnership with Kohl’s & Fitfluential as part of the #MakeYourMove campaign. I was compensated for my time. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Hi Friends!

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time now, you know that I’m a huge fan of babywearing. I’ve been wearing Squish since he was just a few weeks old and I can’t count the number of times it has saved not only my productivity, but my sanity as well!

When he was younger I would wear him around the house when he was fussy, or pop him in the carrier when I needed to cook dinner. I also almost always wear him on our daily walks because I’m not coordinated enough to handle two dog leashes and a stroller all by myself!

Lately I’ve been stepping up my exercise game and have done several different workouts while wearing Squish on my back. I like to think he enjoys it…but even if he doesn’t, he’s usually fairly cooperative at least!

Today I thought it’d be fun to share a babywearing workout with you guys! I like to have a few of these stockpiled for those days when I know our schedule is too busy to make it to the gym and I’m sure I’m not the only mom (or dad!) out there who might be looking to workouts they can do with their little one. It’s only 10 minutes long but if you work hard, you’ll definitely feel the burn!

This workout can be modified to a variety of different fitness levels. I’ll give you some different options for each movement!

Here’s the workout:

10 Minute AMRAP

10 Squats
10 Deadlifts
10 Lunges
10 Step-ups (optional)

In case you don’t know, AMRAP stands for as many rounds as possible. So you’re going to set your timer for 10 minutes and cycle through the workout as many times as you can. I used a kettlebell, but you could also use a dumbbell. If you don’t have a box or bench to step up onto (or your worried about your balance) you can leave that movement out.

Here’s a closer look at each movement:

Beginners: Do your squats without holding a weight.
Advanced: Do your squats holding a kettlebell or dumbbell.

Beginners: Use a kettlebell or dumbbell to perform the deadlifts.
Advanced: Use a heavier weight to make it more challenging.

Beginner: Perform your lunges without holding a weight.
Advanced: Hold a weight while lunging.

Remember this move is optional! Make it easier by finding a shorter box or bench!

I put together quick little video demo for you as well:

The carrier I’m using is the Infantino Flip Front2Back 3-in-1 Carrier. I have several carriers but I like this one because it’s super lightweight and breathable which helps keep both of us cool when we’re working up a sweat. Plus it’s super affordable! Note- remember to make sure your baby has good neck control before wearing them during a workout.

So now it’s your turn!

Are you a babywearer? Have you tried working out while wearing your little one?

Even if you don’t physically wear them, I can’t stress how important it is workout with your kids! Letting them see you be physically active will go a long way towards helping them develop healthy habits. If they’re old enough, invite them to join you in a workout!

I’m challenging you to #makeyourmove this week and do a workout with your kids! Don’t have any? That’s ok! Grab your favorite workout buddy and spend some time sweating together. A workout partner always makes you want to push a little harder!

If you give this workout a try, let me know what you think!

Blue Apron Meals

This post is sponsored by Blue Apron. I was compensated for my time. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Hi Friends!

You know when something happens in life and the timing is just so perfect that you can’t help but feel a huge sense of relief? That’s exactly how I felt when I opened an email from Blue Apron a few weeks ago. I was just home from the hospital with a new baby and getting dinner on the table was a bit of a struggle. Getting to the grocery store was even more of a challenge. So when Blue Apron offered to let me test out their meal delivery service, I jumped at the chance!

In case you’re unfamiliar, Blue Apron basically take meal planning to the next level. They deliver fresh ingredients right to your door (in a refrigerated box) so you can skip your weekly trip to the grocery store, and all the ingredients are pre-measured for you in exactly the right proportions- which makes preparation a cinch! They ship to over 80% of the country  and all meals can be made in under 40 minutes.  When you sign up, you get three meals per week- for two or four people for the price of $9.99 per person with free shipping and there’s no commitment – you can skip or cancel the service at any time.

I was excited when I saw the menu that I’d be getting to test out. All three meals sounded delicious.

Here’s what I made:

Chicken Schnitzel with Watercress, Apple & Beet Salad
click here for the recipe}

One of the things I liked most about Blue Apron was how it exposed me to new ingredients. I eat a lot of chicken prepped a lot of different ways, but schnitzel is not something I’ve made before! I’ve also never tried watercress, and although I like beets, I rarely cook with them.

I loved having the ingredients pre-measured for me so all I had to do was wash, chop and mix. Baby was moderately unimpressed with my cooking efforts.

The end result was great! The chicken was flavorful and the salad was such a unique combination of flavors! I loved the apples and beets together and the dressing had a nice tang to it!

Another highlight- the recipe cards. They came with very clear, easy to follow directions and ingredient lists and a nice description of the dish.

Up next:

Shrimp & Mustard Green Laing with Jasmine Rice
click here for the recipe}

Mustard greens were another new-to-me ingredient!

Here’s the final product:

I loved that all their meals had great visual appeal and could be made easily but look super fancy. This meal had great flavor and was a fun change from the typical curry that I usually make.

And finally:

Orecchiette Pasta with Roasted Cauliflower & Capers
click here for the recipe}

I was a little unsure about this meal because I’m not a huge fan of capers…but I am a huge pasta fan.

Cauliflower is another veggie I don’t buy often but I really enjoyed it roasted in this dish.

I shared this dish with my dad and he really liked the combination of flavors.

I like fun colored veggies so I was a little bummed they sent green cauliflower instead of the purple variety in the picture on the recipe card…but that didn’t affect the flavor 🙂

Side note – don’t I just have the cutest kitchen assistant?!

Anyways… now for the big question- would I use Blue Apron myself?

Yes, but mostly for special occasions.  Here are some situations where I think it would be great:

  • Date night! How fun would it be to use a Blue Apron box for date night- even a couples date night! You could order three 2-person meals and invite another couple over for dinner. All of you could have fun together cooking in the kitchen and there would be enough food for everyone to have a taste of 3 different meals.
  • Treat yourself! Have a particularly busy week coming up? Schedule a Blue Apron order to make dinner time easier at the end of a busy day.
  • Presents! Know a family who has a new baby or is caring for a sick family member? Send them a Blue Apron order to make their lives easier. Or simply treat a friend or family member for a Christmas present!

Blendtec Blender Giveaway

Hi Friends!

It’s been a while since we had a fun giveaway around here and I’ve been waiting for this one for MONTHS! Remember in February when I wrote this Blendtec Blender review? In that post, I promised to give one away just in time for summer. Well friends, that time is now!

One lucky winner will win a Blendtec Blender, plus a twister jar! (Open to US & Canadian residents!)

Let’s recap just a few of the reasons why I love my Blendtec:

  • The touch screen- Easy to use, easy to keep clean and pretty to look at!
  • The dull blades- I’ve cut myself on blender blades before and it’s amazing that these are dull to the touch but blend so well.
  • The handy cleaning tips- ie, just put a little dishsoap and water in the blender and blend to clean, then rinse!
  • The recipe books it included- TONS of great recipes and inspiration.
  • The blender itself- love that the jar is BPA free, it’s the perfect height to fit under a kitchen cabinet and considering how powerful it is, it’s fairly lightweight!

Some things I’ve made lately:

It’s perfect for making my Healthy Ice Cream Sandwiches!

ALL the smoothies…especially now that it’s getting warmer.
Try frozen berries, Greek yogurt, a splash of juice & some peanut butter!
Speaking of peanut butter (& almond butter)-
the twister jar works perfectly for making homemade batches!!

Blendtec Blender Review

Hi Friends!

If you follow me on social media or have been reading the blog lately, you’re probably familiar with my newest kitchen toy:

That’s right! A (FREE) new blender! The amazing folks at Blendtec were kind enough to send me one of their amazing blenders (free of charge) to review and now that I’ve had some time to play with it, I’ve gathered my thoughts to share with you!

You may recall that I first came across Blendtec back in October when I went to FNCE- The Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo! Kristina and I spent about an hour at their both learning all of the cool things it could do. (I wrote about it here).

We devoured the nut butter they made, were totally amazed that you could make ICE CREAM and also saw them make rice flour, soup and a few other things!

I was sent the Designer Series Wildside with the touch screen display to review, along with the Twister Jar.

A few things I was initially impressed by:

Some of the first things I made:

  • A smoothie- It blended up the ice, yogurt and frozen fruit mixture with no problem.
  • Soup- This is probably my favorite feature. No more cooking a huge pot of soup on the stove if I don’t want to….just throw a bunch of veggies into the blendtec, select the soup option and voila! I made Sweet Potato Bisque first and then later made Chicken Tortilla Soup.
  • Nut butter- A no brainer! I was so excited to try out the twister jar to make some homemade almond butter.
  • Banana froyo – delish
  • Brownie batter!

A few things I didn’t like:

  • When I made the first batch of almond butter, I used raw almonds and although it blended, it didn’t get nice and creamy like it did when I watched at FNCE.  However, the second time I made it, I roasted the almonds first and ran through the 50 second blender cycle 4 times instead of the recommended 2 and it came out perfectly.
  • It’s loud…but that’s to be expected for a blender.
  • When you make nut butter, the jar gets HOT. Not a huge deal but definitely need to be careful when touching it.
  • The wildside jar is easy to clean. The mixer jar is a little more challenging. If you make nut butter, it’s a little hard to clean under the blades. It can be done by cleaning and then sliding a paper towel underneath the blades…it just takes a little while.

Still on my to-make list:

  • Hummus
  • Pizza dough
  • Their famous Popeye’s ice cream
  • Salsa
  • So.Much.More

My overall impression:

This Blendtec is definitely worth the money. It’s easy to use, well made, powerful and extremely versatile. There are so many different things you can use it for that it can replace the mixer and food processor in many situations. I can’t wait to try out a few more recipes and let you know how they turn out…and of course develop some of my own!!

And the best news…I get to give one of you guys coming up here in a couple of months so stay tuned! Can’t wait until then? Buy one now by clicking here. (affiliate link).

Let’s chat: What’s your favorite thing to make in your blender besides smoothies or nut butter?

Winter Games Workout

Hi Friends!

Let’s talk workouts today, shall we? It’s been a while since I posted one that isn’t crossfit-related and I kinda miss it. Thanks to Blue Diamond Almonds for sponsoring this post. As you guys know, the Winter Games are gearing up to start in Sochi in under a month and I can’t wait! I love watching all the skiing events because I’m totally in awe of everything those athletes can do. I’ve been on skis exactly once in my entire life and let me just tell you that my first trip down a VERY SMALL hill did not end well!

Anyways….I started to get even more excited about the Winter Games when my friends at Blue Diamond Almonds reached out to tell me that they are the official snack nut of the US Ski Team and US Snowboarding! As an RD, I was super pumped to hear that because I always love to see healthy snacks being promoted and I think it’s awesome that Blue Diamond is helping provide healthy fuel to the Winter Games athletes!

“Nutrition is a key component of our athletes’ high performance training program. Our snowboarders and skiers must sustain their energy for long, exhilarating workouts and competition,” said Allen Tran, MS, RD, USSA High Performance Chef. “Blue Diamond Snack Almonds are ideal snacks for our athletes because they are high in protein and rich in fiber which helps them maintain their energy levels.”

I love that here’s a huge focus this year on making sure these athletes are provided with healthy food options while training and competing, especially lean protein sources. Fun little tidbit: As a healthy snack, Blue Diamond Snack Almonds are being offered at the USSA Center of Excellence training facility and kitchen in Park City, UT, where hundreds of U.S. winter athletes are preparing for the upcoming Games. In Sochi, Russia, the USSA team, which is the largest contingent of athletes at the Winter Games, will all be able to snack on a rainbow of Blue Diamond Snack Almond flavors as well!

So, I’m sure I’m not in the minority when I say that watching elite events like the Winter Games ALWAYS motivates me to kick my own training up a notch! On that note, I put together a fun little bodyweight circuit workout for you guys to try. It’s designed to get your heart rate up and blood flowing to help combat the arctic chill we’re currently experiencing!

PLUS the moves are all things that you might see some of your favorite skiers and snowboarders incorporating into their training as well!

In case you’re not familiar, here are some links that show you how to perform these exercises:

Burpee Broad Jumps
Box Jumpovers
Mountain Climbers
Plie Squat Jump

Now….go have yourself a killer workout and then refuel with lean protein and healthy carbs to help your body recover!

Cook Smarts Review

Hi Friends!

Let’s talk meal planning today, shall we? Thanks to CookSmarts for sponsoring today’s post. You guys know I’m a huge fan of Sunday Food Prep and meal planning goes right along with that. Although I, admittedly, slack a lot on meal planning…it works for me because I’m good at coming up with meals on the fly. I prep ingredients and most nights I don’t have any trouble turning them into a quick dinner. But I’ve been cooking a long time. I’ve made a lot of things. I have a large recipe catalog (both on my blog and in my mind) that I can pull from. I also have list of go-to meals that I can make pretty much on autopilot (like, ahem, last week when I looked at the clock at realized it was 9pm and we hadn’t eaten yet…and I whipped up a chicken, black bean and red pepper egg scramble in under 10 minutes).

While this method works for me, I’m a realist…and I know it doesn’t work for everyone. Many people NEED to plan their meals ahead of time to help them make it through the week. In fact, it’s something I encourage all my clients/readers/family members/pretty much anyone I encounter to do- because it works.

Some people enjoy the process of meal planning- looking through cookbooks, blogs, recipe sites, pinterest, etc to find new things to try. They like coming up with a plan, making a grocery list, etc. Other people just can’t be bothered. It stresses them out…it’s too much work…it takes too long. And that’s totally fine! It’s for people like this, and even people who like meal planning but sometimes get too busy or too tired to do it every single week, that Cook Smarts can be an excellent option. Some of you might recall that Cook Smarts was one of our Elf4Health Sponsors this year. Elle actually introduced me to them before the challenge started and after getting to know Jess, the founder, throughout the challenge, I decided I wanted to introduce Cook Smarts to you guys because I think it’s such a cool service!

A little more about Cook Smarts:

Or just follow the simple recipes (complete with prep instructions) each weeknight. Not sure how to chop something like onions? They have links to videos that show you how!

Plus they’re all about teaching and they have a whole page of cooking tips and free guides for things like pantry essentials and produce shelf life!

I even tried out a couple of the meals myself. The chicken pot pie was calling my name! I actually forgot to get puff pastry at the grocery store for the topping so I was super glad that I could look at the paleo and gluten-free options they had available and was still able to make a crust based on what I had on hand!

The gluten-free crust was made with almond flour. I was skeptical at first because it wasn’t really a dough that I could roll out, I just kinda spooned it on top…but it baked up nicely!

Fitmark Bags Review & Giveaway

Hi Friends!

If you follow me on IG and twitter, you may remember a couple of weeks ago when I started raving about my new gym bag from Fitmark Bags.

(I was sent this bag at no cost to me.
All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own)

For those of you who have seen my previous “gym bag” (think canvas reusable grocery sack and you’ve pretty much got it), you know this is a serious upgrade. I’ve been looking for a new bag for a while and after connecting with Fitmark on Instagram and Twitter, I knew this was the one for me!

Fitmark is the first brand to make a gym bag for the fitness enthusiast.  Here are some of the key features of the Sport Tote that I have:

    • Separate Kicks and Laundry bag with anti-microbial protection
    • Fit-All™ Executive-class main compartment for all your needs
    • Fit-Color™ custom interior with hand-selected colorway
    • Rear, detailed zippered utility pocket
    • Ergonomic and fully adjustable shoulder straps with custom detailed stitching
    • Highly polished, custom nickel-coated clips and harnesses
    • Custom leather zipper pulls
    • Enforced custom nickel-coated rivets with logo detail
    • Soft leather Fitmark™ emblem with detailed stitching
    • Soft lined pocket with categorized sections for your phone, keys and valuables
    • Luxurious handles with leather accents and custom detailed stitching

They also carry 3 other styles of tote, plus messenger bags, duffel bags, backpacks and food organizers! And they come in all sorts of fun colors. Mine comes in purple and pink with tan interior or black with pink interior!

Let’s take a closer look at some of the details shall we?

The bag is super high quality and it’s big enough to fit all my crossfit stuff but still small enough to be stylish and manageable so I’m not losing things IN the bag! It holds my shoes, jumprope, weight belt, tape, hoodie/extra clothes and water bottle with ease. However, I may not even use it as a gym bag forever. I can see myself taking it on weekend trips, etc as a stylish tote bag!

I love how many pockets and compartments there are. There’s a small zipper pocket on the front side that I throw my keys and phone in while i’m at the gym, plus larger pockets on either side of the main opening (on zipper and one with a magnetic closure).

Inside the main compartment there are even more pockets! There’s another zipper pocket, plus two other inner pouches that would be great for toiletries if you’re getting ready at the gym. And probably my favorite part? There’s a waterbottle pocket! I’m notorious for leaving my waterbottle at the gym so I love that it has its own special spot.

It also comes with a separate bag for shoes or dirty clothes, which I love. I keep my oly lifting shoes and rope climbing socks in it so that they’re always in my bag, but not getting everything else dirty.

So there you have it, friends! My newest obsession!

Now that I’ve told you all about how awesome these bags are, you probably want one, right? Good news! I get to give one away 🙂 One lucky winner will receive a Sport Tote just like the one I have, in a color of your choice!

Backyard Blast Workout

Hi Friends!

I’ve got a fun little workout for you! Before I started Crossfit, I used to make up my own workouts all the time. I love coming up with them, so when my Blend Sponsor, Blue Diamond Almonds, asked me to create a workout to help them kick off their Feel Good for Summer campaign….I jumped at the chance!

One of the reasons I love Blue Diamond as a company is because they believe in encouraging all aspects of health. Their products are heart healthy and delicious, but instead of focusing just on food, they also focus on physical and mental health. They encourage their customers to be active, spend time with their families and enjoy life…while also fueling themselves with healthy food!

This workout is a great way to get your heart pumping. It involves all body weight movements so all you need is yourself! So grab a towel if the grass makes you itchy and head out the backyard for some fun in the sun!

Here’s a breakdown of a couple of the movements you may not be familiar with. Click the link to see a video:

A Heart Healthy Dinner Party

Hi Friends!

Happy Monday 🙂 Over the weekend we had some friends over for a dinner party. But not just any dinner party! Thanks to the lovely folks over at Eggland’s Best, we were able to host an EB Mine Brinner party to help promote February as National Heart Health month! (*I received a free package of Eggland’s Best goodies as well a gift card to help me with the groceries for the Brinner party but I hosted this party because I believe strongly in the importance in raising awareness in the importance of heart health.)

  • According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States. However, there are simple steps you can take to help reduce your risk, including proper nutrition and daily exercise. These lifestyle changes, along with not smoking can help cut your odds of having a heart attack by 92% (Source: Woman’s Day, February 2012).
  • Eggs can be incorporated into a heart-healthy diet, and are one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. Eggland’s Best eggs contain less cholesterol than ordinary eggs, as well as more than 2X the heart healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, 2X more Vitamin D, and 10X more Vitamin E, a vitamin associated with reducing the risk of heart disease.

So here’s the deal. We all know I LOVE breakfast. And I LOVE eggs. Egg sandwiches are pretty much a staple in my lunch-time rotation, scrambled eggs make an appearance pretty much every weekend and the hubby and I actually eat brinner fairly often.

Due to the fact that last week was one of the craziest off my life, I didn’t actually start planning this party until Friday afternoon. The thing about me and planning parties is that I tend to get a little over zealous. And I make A LOT of lists. Since I was in a bit of a time crunch, I turned to my fellow bloggers for some inspiration when I was making my list of healthy egg dishes.

First, let’s start with what I didn’t have a chance to make. These are dishes that sounded fantastic, but I either didn’t have enough people coming, enough ovens, or enough arms to make them all. In case you’ve never tried, it’s difficult to plan a party that involves several egg dished that all need to be cooked and done at the same time!

So, here’s some great egg recipes for you to check out that are still on my to try:

Poached Eggs in Spicy Tomato Sauce from Cat @ Breakfast to Bed
Fried Eggs in Bell Pepper Rings
Baked Eggs in Bread Bowls from Sarah @ Baking Serendipity
Peach Dutch Baby Pancake from Brandi @ Bran Appetit
Spinach & Feta Wonton Quiche Cups from Jenn @ Peas and Crayons

Those look pretty good right? I bet you’re wondering what exactly I did make? Well, let’s take a look at the menu:

The Lean Green Bean Brinner Party

Deviled Eggs
Avocado & Egg Salad Sliders
Mixed Berry Baked French Toast
Sausage, Egg & Vegetable Breakfast Casserole
Veggie Egg Muffins
Bean & Veggie Breakfast Burritos w/ Ranchero Sauce
Fruit Salad
Orange Juice & Cocktails

Let’s take a closer look shall we? Like I said, it started with a lot of lists…and LOTS of eggs.

I got up Saturday morning and got to work. I started with the French Toast because it typically sits overnight. I used this recipe from Taste of Home. I prepped the bread and let it sit all day. I decided to cook this first because I knew it would reheat a little better, if necessary, than the dishes that were more egg heavy like the casserole. Our guests came at 7:00pm, so I popped this in the oven at 5:30 and cooked it for 1/2 an hour. Then I took it out, added the berry topping and baked it for another 15 minutes. I stored it in an insulated bag and it was still nice and warm by the time we ate, about an hour later.

Next I tackled the cold dishes. I wanted to chose a few dishes that didn’t need to be baked/require the oven. I had coupons for pre-cooked and peeled eggs but couldn’t find them at my grocery store, so I pulled out my pressure cooker and got to work.

I made my first ever deviled eggs using this recipe from Anne @ Fannetastic Food. This recipe swaps greek yogurt for the mayo, an easy swap to make these more heart healthy. I was a little nervous about making these because I don’t eat them and really had no idea what they were supposed to taste like. Plus I only had spicy brown mustard instead of dijon. But they were all gone at the end of the night so I guess they were good 🙂 I made them in the morning and then just sprinkled on the paprika right before everyone came!

I used the rest of the hard-boiled eggs to make egg salad, another thing I don’t eat. I knew I wanted to add some avocado to make these even more heart-healthy so I was excited when I found this recipe from The Pioneer Woman. I halved the recipe, left out the chives and swapped greek yogurt for the mayo…then I served it on slider buns. I made the eg salad ahead of time. I was nervous about the avocado browning but since there was vinegar in the recipe I figured it would be ok. And it was! Then I just spooned them onto buns right before serving.

While I was cooking, the boys had a little playtime with this fun little egg toy…It’s their new fav.

Next up, I prepped the breakfast casserole. I used this recipe from Taste of Home and used Morningstar Breakfast Sausage. It was my first time buying the pre-shredded hash browns and they worked out really well. I bought the plain kind because they were very low sodium. I assembled the whole casserole and stuck it in the fridge. In the evening, after the french toast was cooked, I popped this casserole in and it finished cooking right around 7:15 when people started arriving.

Next up, I made the egg muffins. I followed this recipe from Amy @ The Scene From Me. I’ve made these before and they were a hit with the hubby. This time, I left the sausage out and just used veggies and cheese (1/2 feta, 1/2 cheddar). They’re a great, healthy breakfast that can be made ahead of time and re-heated throughout the week, or even frozen and eaten later. I put these in the oven last, right when people started eating and they were ready just in time for the people who came back for seconds.

The last thing I made was breakfast burritos. They were inspired by this recipe from Katie @ Yes I Want Cake. I left out the potatoes and bacon and just used black beans, veggies and eggs, plus some avocado, tomatoes and cheese. I started cooking these around 6:30 and assembled them all and wrapped them in foil to keep them warm.

I also whipped up some of this Ranchero Sauce from Janetha @ Meals and Moves for people to top the burritos with. I used 1 poblano pepper, a can of hot, diced jalapenos and only 1 Tbsp butter.

EB also sent me coupons to give away to my guests. They were a huge hit! We all like our eggs 🙂

I also made a HUGE fruit salad for everyone to enjoy on the side.

And our friends brought the cocktails!

So there you go! A full party recap. In case you didn’t pick up on it, everything at the party was totally vegetarian! And I’m happy to say that all the dishes were a hit, even with my meat-loving friends!!!! Hopefully this inspired you to try a few new healthy egg recipes!
