Animal-loving Brits who Can’t Bear to Leave Their Beloved Pets are Taking Them Away on Countryside Escapes, to ski Resorts – and even on SPA BREAKS #CreatureCritics – Katzenworld

Animal-loving Brits who can’t bear to leave their beloved pets are taking them away on countryside escapes, to ski resorts – and even on SPA BREAKS.

We are famously fond of all creatures great and small, and now a survey of 1,000 UK pet owners has revealed 41 per cent have taken theirs on holiday.

But 54 per cent find it difficult to find pet-friendly accommodation, the study by Hotels.com found.

The countryside was the top holiday destination for pets, followed by the beach and a woodland retreat.

Remarkably, 10 per cent have taken their pet to a ski resort and 11 per cent have gone on a spa break with their animals.

The study of more than 8,000 animal owners across 15 countries was carried out as part of the Hotels.com’s ‘Creature Critics’ initiative to recruit animals to review its accommodation.

The lockdown, where many humans have spent more time than ever before with their pets, has led to a growing anxiety about going on holiday without them.

This has seen a 300 per cent spike in demand for pet-friendly hotels over the past six months.

Not wanting to leave the animals alone after months of being at home with them is the most common reason for taking their pet away, followed by the fear that they would miss them too much and the realisation of how much they love them.

Although 10 per cent of British pet owners admitted to taking their pet on holiday to help their flirting.

Emma Tagg, from Hotels.com, said: “With lockdown making us clingier than ever, it’s no surprise that no-one wants to leave their pet pal behind.

“At Hotels.com we want to make sure each pet-friendly hotel is up to scratch, which is why we launched the Pet Friendly category within our ‘Loved by Guests’ awards.

“But the reality is we can’t review all the hotels ourselves, and honestly – what do us humans know?

“We’re ready for a red-hot team of Creature Critics to take the lead, so pet owners, and pets, can rest assured that the hotels have been reviewed by the best.”

To make finding pet friendly accommodation a happier experience, Hotels.com has launched a global search for animal travellers to make up their team of ‘Creature Critics’, who will review their Loved by Guests, best pet-friendly accommodation.

Three pets can be part of the #CreatureCritics team and win 10x $150 (£115) coupons each, enabling them to review pet-friendly venues.

To coincide with the global search, Hotels.com has filmed a hilarious video of its own ‘Canine Critic’, the pint-sized chihuahua Dolly Pawton, meeting potential reviewers.

This includes an adorable hedgehog named Lionel and an extraordinary dog called Agador, which has almost 200,000 followers on Instagram.

*If you think your travelling creature has what it takes to be part of the Creature Critic team, post a pet pic on Instagram detailing why your pet should be part of the team and tag and follow @hotelsdotcom with #CreatureCritics.

Or, you can explain why your pet should win on Twitter, tagging and following @hotelsdotcomUK and #CreatureCritics.

Last Chance for the iCatCare Photo Competition 2020! – Katzenworld

International Cat Care (iCatCare) is on the hunt for the best feline photographers with the 2020 launch of its annual photography competition. With mere days left to enter, now is your chance!

For the competition this year, the charity is exploring the six different life stages of cats, from kitten to super senior, with the theme ‘The Six Stages of Cat’. This means that all cats are suitable subject matter and it’s a great opportunity for photographers to get creative with their pictures. The iCatCare judges would like to see some behaviour you might not associate with the life stage, for example super senior cats playing with toys, but entries are by no means limited to this.

Pictures of cats from all six life stages, kitten, junior, adult, mature, senior and super senior, are requested and entrants are asked to enter the life stage of the cat in the photo, or at least an estimate, when submitting their pictures. To help in determining the life stages of cats, iCatCare has created a poster that shows the life stage alongside the cat’s age and the equivalent human age. The poster can be viewed and downloaded from the iCatCare website at: https://icatcare.org/advice/how-to-tell-your-cats-age-in-human-years/

The charity’s annual photography competition was launched in 2013, and since then it has attracted tens of thousands of entries. Previous themes have included ‘Cat-human relationships’, ‘Kittenhood’, ‘Street cats’, ‘Cat naps’, ‘The beauty of cats’ and ‘Cats for all seasons’. This year’s theme allows for a much broader spread of ideas from entrants and the judges are looking forward to seeing how it’s interpreted.

There will be twelve winning images, with one overall winner who will receive £500 in prize money. All twelve winners will have their images feature on charity merchandise (such as greetings cards, postcards, calendars) which will be sold to raise funds for the charity’s work.

To find out more and to enter, visit: photography competition. The competition is now open for entries and will run until 10 am (BST) on 1 July 2020. Winners will be announced on iCatCare’s social media accounts shortly after.

Work From Home Pet Awards + Our own Photo Series of Working from Home Pets – Katzenworld

Hi everyone,

First of all, we’d like to post a new entry in our Working from Home Series

This weeks entry comes from Rachelle and shows Giselle Minou who got a little tired of the family mask construction project which was underway, which Giselle Minou found less than exciting, so she took a little snooze.

Please do continue to send us your awesome photos of how your pets continue to help you with your daily life while the lockdowns continue.

Secondly, as part of this weeks call out for how your cats are helping you work from home we would also like to draw special attention to the Work From Home Pet Awards by Mayhew:

Does your four-legged friend have what it takes to be our Furry Employee of The Month?

Now is your chance to put your pet to the test or name and shame the ones who always leave their lunch area in a mess, all in support of Mayhew! We’ve launched the Work From Home Pet Awards to recognise our four-legged colleagues that are lending a helpful paw during our time at home. Submit the best picture of your pet for the right to brag that you have the Most Disruptive Dog, Clingiest Feline Co-worker or that your working from home companion really is Furry Employee of The Month.

Categories

You can enter your dog or cat into any of the following categories. Our panel of expert judges will pick a shortlist of five dogs or cats for each category. These will then go through to a special public vote on social media! The winner of each category will battle it out at the end of the week to be crowned Mayhew’s Furry Employee of the Month.

For Cats

Clingiest Feline Co-worker: Does your cat like to lie on your keyboard when you’re trying to email your team?
Most Socially Distant Cat: Tucked in corners, staring at you from the tops of cupboards with those stay away eyes.
Top Boss: It may not be an official title but they sure act like it.

For Dogs

Messiest Workmate: The ones who choose to spend their time tearing up paper rather than filing.
Most Disruptive Dog: Wet noses popping up in Skype calls, climbing onto laps when you are in the middle of something and giving you those puppy dog eyes.
Asleep on the Job: It’s a dogs life! Pooches worn out after a hard day at the office, passed out in the most inconvenient places or tucked up while you work on the sofa.

The Final

Furry Employee of The Month: The top cats and dogs from each category that are always there to lend a helping paw while you are working from home!

How does it work?

Voting will take place over three days commencing Monday 27 April across Mayhew’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Two categories will be available to vote for on each day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

The entry with the most votes from each category will be declared the winner. For the morning categories, this will be determined at 1pm and for the afternoon categories, this will be determined at 5pm. There will then be a final heat on Friday 1 May where all of the category winners will be put to a vote for Furry Employee of the Month – one dog and one cat!

Each lucky winner will receive…

  • A virtual rosette and certificate
  • Their pet’s image hosted on the Mayhew website
  • The winners of Furry Employee of The Month will be featured in the Summer issue of Mayhew’s Tails magazine.

The Rules

  • Human entrants must be 13 years or older
  • Your submission must be of an animal you own or have permission to enter in the competition
  • Mayhew reserves the right to disqualify any image we believe to be submitted without permission
  • Submissions for each category will be voted on my a panel of Mayhew expert judges with their top five selected entries going to public vote.
