Latest Thinking Offered to Companion Animal Veterinary Teams – Katzenworld

New Global Guidelines on Professional Wellness; Reproduction and Direct Zoonoses, as well as an updated set of its highly-regarded Vaccination Guidelines are set to be launched by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) during WSAVA World Congress 2023. The event takes place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 27-29 September 2023.

The WSAVA’s peer-reviewed Global Guidelines are created by experts on its clinical committees to highlight best practice and set minimum standards in key areas of veterinary practice. Free to WSAVA members, they are designed to be relevant to veterinarians wherever in the world they are working and are its most frequently downloaded educational resource.

  • The new Global Guidelines on Professional Wellness have been created by the WSAVA’s Professional Wellness Group to form an evidence-based, accessible set of tools and other resources to support veterinary wellness, that embrace the differing regional, economic and cultural needs of WSAVA members around the world.
  • The Reproduction Control Guidelines, created by the WSAVA’s Reproduction Control Committee, aim to help members make science-based choices for the management of reproduction in their patients, while safeguarding animal welfare and supporting the human-companion animal bond.
  • The new Direct Zoonoses Guidelines from the WSAVA’s One Health Committee present global recommendations on how to avoid human illness from direct contact with small companion animals and their infectious agents. Regional guidelines are expected to follow.
  • The new Vaccination Guidelines provide a comprehensive update to its existing Guidelines and offer a range of new sections and content areas.

All of the new Global Guidelines will be submitted to the Journal of Small Animal Practice, the WSAVA’s official scientific journal, for peer review. The WSAVA launched an updated set of its Global Guidelines for Pain Management in 2022, with Guidelines in other areas, including nutrition and dentistry also available for free download from the WSAVA website.

WSAVA World Congress is the leading global forum for companion animal veterinary professionals. Its unrivalled scientific program brings together expert speakers from around the world to discuss the latest thinking in key areas of companion animal practice. New for 2023 is the inclusion of a stream covering key topics, such as leadership and business management. Masterclasses, workshops, lectures from this year’s WSAVA Award winners and a social program showcasing Lisbon’s renowned culture and cuisine are all on offer.

Commenting, WSAVA President Dr Ellen van Nierop, said: “Standards of companion animal veterinary care vary around the world. WSAVA Global Guidelines help to address this inconsistency, offering tiered protocols, tools and other guidance to support veterinary team members wherever they are in practice.

“We’re delighted to add these new and updated Global Guidelines to our portfolio – and I thank the many committee members who have dedicated so much of their own time to producing these invaluable resources for WSAVA members worldwide. We look forward to them joining our existing Global Guidelines as hallmarks of best practice.”

She added: “We’re looking forward to launching these new Global Guidelines during WSAVA 2023 – the annual coming together of the global companion animal veterinary community. Our Congress is a unique opportunity for the profession to learn, share ideas, and build relationships with colleagues from all over the world. We can’t wait to meet old friends and new in Lisbon for another memorable Congress later this year.”

The creation of the new WSAVA Global Guidelines has been supported by the association’s Industry Partners as below:

  • The work of the WSAVA Professional Wellness Group is kindly supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition
  • The work of the WSAVA Reproduction Control Committee is kindly supported by Virbac
  • The work of the WSAVA Vaccination Guidelines Group is kindly supported by MSD Animal Health
  • The work of the WSAVA One Health Committee is kindly supported by MSD Animal Health, the Purina Institute and Zoetis.

Free Webinar Helps Increase the Impact of TNR Programs – Katzenworld

Free Webinar Helps Increase the Impact of TNR Programs

Community Cats Podcast and Neighborhood Cats are excited to announce a brand-new webinar to maximize success when working with outdoor cats; Targeted TNR & Getting the Most Bang for Your Buck will be live on Saturday, May 20 from 2 – 4 p.m. ET.

The webinar will discuss how targeted trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs can have a greater impact on reducing the population of free-roaming cats in a community than spay/neuter alone. By identifying areas with high cat populations and focusing TNR efforts there, organizations can achieve higher sterilization rates and more effectively reduce the number of free-roaming cats over time.

“Targeting is a crucial aspect of any successful TNR program, but it’s often overlooked,” said Bryan Kortis, National Programs Director at Neighborhood Cats. “In this webinar, we’ll explain why targeting is important and provide practical tips on how to do it, no matter the size of your program.”

Registration is available here. The webinar is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about targeted TNR or helping outdoor cats. No experience required.

Neighborhood Cats helps caretakers, animal shelters, and every day community members help outdoor cats. Their team extends from New York City to Maui. They regularly lead workshops to help anyone learn how to TNR and maximize their life saving through mass trapping and targeting. The webinar will be led by Bryan Kortis, National Programs Director, and Susan Richmond, Executive Director. For more information about Neighborhood Cats, visit neighborhoodcats.org.

Surrender Prevention Training Helps Keep More Cats and Kittens in Homes – Katzenworld

Surrender Prevention Training Helps Keep More Cats and Kittens in Homes

Community Cats Podcast is teaming up with renowned cat behaviorist Dr. Rachel Gellar to present a new certification workshop, designed to keep more cats and families together.

The Surrender Prevention Certification Workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 17 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. ET.

The workshop aims to help anyone on the front lines of animal shelters or rescues, who routinely work with families thinking about giving their cat or kitten over to the shelter for reasons related to feline behavior. This session will offer more information about surrender prevention, what it is and why it works, and some common interventions.

Instructed by Dr. Rachel Geller, she will share real examples, with proven results, setting the potential surrenderer and cat on the road to a happy relationship together and keeping the cat in her home. Attendees will receive a certificate after completing a short quiz.

Folks interested in attending the session can learn more here and register here. Registration is $10.

Rachel Geller, Ed.D. is the Founder and President of All Cats All the Time, Inc. which is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting the adoption of cats and preventing their surrender and abandonment by helping cat/animal shelters – and cat owners who cannot otherwise afford to do so – access cat behavior counseling free of charge for the cats in their care.

Online Workshop Helps Public, Animal Control Ease the Burden on Shelters Overwhelmed by Kittens – Katzenworld

Online Workshop Helps Public, Animal Control Ease the Burden on Shelters Overwhelmed by Kittens

Community Cats Podcast, in partnership with Neighborhood Cats, will hold it’s popular Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Certification Workshop on Saturday, May 6 from 2 – 4:30 p.m. EDT.

The TNR Certification Workshop has been endorsed by the National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA), and continuing education credits are available for animal control professionals who attend.

Kitten season is in full swing! This phenomenon, coined by staff and volunteers involved in animal rescue, occurs each spring when free-roaming outdoor cats become pregnant and have their kittens outdoors. Many animal shelters are quickly inundated and overwhelmed by the number of kittens needing care. Fortunately, Trap-Neuter-Return can help decrease the number of kittens being born outside and brought to the shelter.

From animal control to the general public, anyone with a passion for helping cats and kittens is encouraged to register and learn from trappers who have been in the field for more than 20 years. This workshop covers best practices for TNR and colony management, including all planning and preparations for successful trapping, and how to help outdoor cats through the cold winter months. There will also be time for questions from attendees, which will be answered in real time by the experts from Neighborhood Cats. Bring your toughest questions!

All attendees will receive a certificate after taking a short quiz and gain access to an exclusive Facebook group to continue networking with other caregivers.

Session duration is 2.5 hours followed by optional 15-minute Q&A. Registration is $10 and includes access to the recorded session, handouts, and certificate, as well as access to a Facebook discussion group exclusively for trappers and folks actively engaged in community cat programs.

More information about the webinar is available here. The TNR Certification Workshop is offered monthly. Anyone interested in attending can register at www.communitycatspodcast.com/GetTNRCertified.

Individualized training opportunities for organizations are available upon request. Interested parties should email Stacy LeBaron at stacy@communitycatspodcast.com to learn more about collaborating with Community Cats Podcast.

Neighborhood Cats helps caretakers, animal shelters, and every day community members help outdoor cats. Their team extends from New York City to Maui. Join the Animal Welfare Foundation’s Annual Discussion Forum as the Charity Celebrates 40 Years – Katzenworld

Tickets are now on sale for the Animal Welfare Foundation’s annual Discussion Forum, which will not only be packed full of expert speakers and key animal welfare debates but will also proudly celebrate 40 years of fantastic work by the charity.

The Animal Welfare Foundation, which is the British Veterinary Association’s (BVA’s) charity, turns 40 this year. The Discussion Forum, on 6 June 2023 at One Birdcage Walk in Westminster, is one of the highlights of the charity’s calendar and will mark this milestone during the day by looking back at the charity’s work – which has included investing more than £2 million into research – and at how animal welfare has changed and progressed since it began. The event will include special talks by beneficiaries of AWF, including Professor Donald Broom, whose AWF funded animal welfare professorship at Cambridge University was a world first that transformed the study of animal welfare within veterinary education.

There will be plenty of opportunities to network during the day and also at a celebratory evening drinks reception, which will include an appearance by guest speaker Giles Yeo MBE, a geneticist and professor of Molecular Neuroendocrinology. He will share anecdotes from his career and insights on his work, which focusses on the role of genetics in obesity and includes a research project on the ‘fat gene’ and how it affects obesity in Labradors.

The event, which is open to the whole veterinary community, animal welfare professionals, students and policy makers, will host expert speakers who will delve into key cross-species welfare topics, including technology, environmental sustainability, diet and welfare and human behaviour change.

Prior to the event, delegates will be invited to take up the opportunity of getting on stage themselves in brand new “lightning sessions”. These will run throughout the day separate to the main sessions and will give delegates the chance to talk about the welfare issues and topics they are passionate about.

The programme for the event is continuing to evolve over the coming weeks but so far it includes a discussion and debate on ‘Technology and welfare’ exploring the benefits and risks of new and innovative veterinary technology to animal welfare across multiple species, with particular focus on ‘animal welfare monitoring technology’ and the role of the vet professional in this area. Joining the panel is equine vet and founder of the Equitrace app Kevin Corley and Professor Jonathan Statham, who is Chair of the Animal Health and Welfare Board (AHWBE) for England. They will be joined by Nicola Blackie, Senior Lecturer in Production Animal Science at Royal Veterinary College.

Another session, ‘Human Behaviour Change – Influencing owner behaviour and preventing welfare issues’, will focus on the science of human behaviour change in relation to animal welfare issues and will help to empower delegates to apply new skills and knowledge while in practice. It will be led by Suzanne Rogers and Jo White of Human Behaviour Change for Life and will focus on issues around breeding and introduce the audience to practical techniques to influence owner behaviour for better welfare.

‘Diet, sustainability, and animal welfare’ will be debated by an expert panel examining environmental sustainability and its implications for animal welfare, focusing on human and animal diets. The panel, which includes Head of Research at Compassion in World Farming Sarah Ison; CEO of Agri-EPI Dave Ross, Rob Percival of Soil Association and Dr Hillary Pearce, Associate Manager of Professional and Veterinary Affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, will discuss if an effective balance between environmentally sustainable food production and animal welfare is possible.

AWF’s Chair of Trustees Julian Kupfer said: “AWF’s Discussion Forum is always an energetic, insightful and inspirational debate. It provides veterinary professionals with an important, safe space to explore and engage with often difficult issues, such as contentious subjects like overtreatment and the link between human and animal abuse. The Forum provides delegates with the opportunity to deepen and evolve their understanding of animal welfare as well as being a vital catalyst for action. As AWF celebrates its 40th anniversary, we look forward to sharing our reflections of the past four decades and the important work of the Foundation.”

BVA President Malcolm Morley added: “The Animal Welfare Foundation’s Discussion Forum is a unique opportunity to network with and hear from experts from across the veterinary and animal welfare sector as well as discuss and debate key issues and concerns. The Foundation has done so much good in the past 40 years, so this is not only a chance to celebrate an amazing milestone but also to reflect on the difference the charity has made and how it can continue to fight for future improvements to animal welfare.”
