Happy World Cat Day everyone!

World Cat-Day, also known as Internation Cat-Day, is celebrated throughout the world on August 08, 2014. It was founded in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and other animal rights groups. The cat is a small, furry, domesticated, carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Although cat ownership has commonly been associated with women, a US poll reported that men and women were equally likely to own a cat.

Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere in the world. Cats are a common companion animal in Europe and North America, and their worldwide population exceeds 500 million. In 1998 there were around 43 million cats in Western Europe, 33 million in Eastern Europe, seven million in Japan and three million in Australia. A 2007 report stated that about 37 million US households owned cats, with an average of 2.2 cats per household giving a total population of around 82 million. In contrast, there are about 72 million pet dogs in that country.

Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species and use a variety of vocalizations, pheromones and types of body language for communication. These include meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting. Interactions with cats may improve health and reduce physical responses to stress: for example the presence of cats may moderate increased blood pressure. Cat ownership may also improve psychological health by providing emotional support and dispelling feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness. Foodie pet names are on the rise, with unusual options including Baguette, French Fry, and Cream Cheese

Have you ever looked at a pet and thought, “What an adorable little baguette!” Well, it turns out, you’re not alone, as a new study has revealed that food plays a big role when naming pets, with over 1 in 10 (12%) of our furry friends are named after food or drink.

TrustedHousesitters has released its 2023 Pet Names Study, which analysed over 50,000 pet names registered on its platform and found that food-inspired names are surprisingly popular for both cats and dogs.

13% of cats were named after a food or drink, with cat owners more likely to pick foodie names than dog owners. While popular names, including Pepper and Coco, take the top spot for cats, many owners opt for more unusual options; Miso, Bean(s), Sushi, Kiwi, Mango, Taco, Cheeto, Cheddar, Basil, and Chilli feature in the top 50 food-related pet names for cats, with one owner even naming their cat French Fry.

11% of dog names are food or drink inspired. Popular foodie names for dogs include classics such as Pepper, Ginger, and Olive. However, many dog owners also get creative when picking a name for their furry friend. Some of the more unusual food-inspired names found for pooches include Dulce de Leche, Cream Cheese, Snickers and Baguette.

The five most popular drink-related names for pets all relate to alcohol, with Cosmo, Whiskey, Brandy, Guinness, and Julip coming out on top. Unique drink-inspired options, including Shiraz, Tequila and Boba also made the list.

Yogi, the ragdoll cat, was displaying symptoms of overgrooming, which led him to develop bald patches across his body. As a result, he had to wear a specialist surgical suit to protect his skin from irritation and infection. Yogi’s owner Paula Saint contacted Amanda Campion, a feline behaviourist and Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) member, for professional advice. Following a combination of behavioural and environmental modifications, Yogi has gone on to win several cat shows.

Paula first sought a referral from the vet to ascertain exclusion from any underlying health conditions, as internal and external pathologies can co-exist. With no medical reason for Yogi’s overgrooming, Paula enlisted the expertise of behaviourist Amanda Campion. It was determined Yogi was displaying signs of anxiety, which presented as overgrooming, much like when a human bites their nails.

Upon meeting Yogi and Paula, Amanda determined that Yogi’s compulsion to lick himself was due to redirected anxiety, a common form of anxiety behaviour seen among cats living in the same environment. When a cat experiences something over-stimulating and it cannot respond to those feelings – frustration, aggression or fear may be redirected towards an innate object, itself, another pet or even its owner. In Yogi’s case, it presented as obsessive-compulsive grooming of his coat.

It was decided that it was appropriate for Yogi to go on an anxiolytic support plan which included a combination of husbandry changes and non-invasive pheromone therapy alongside a regime of distraction. He was prescribed Clomipramine which was effective from just four days. Amanda also recommended the reduction of environmental stressors by placing high-reward cat nip toys and a puzzle feeder to associate a safe zone. This helped to divert negative attention from destructive behaviour into something more positive and reduce anxiety and frustration.

One month later, Yogi had significantly improved, and his destructive grooming habits had ceased allowing him to have the suit off for several hours a day. Two short weeks after this, he could remove his protective suit entirely. Now, Yogi is an award-winning cat, having participated in 12 shows across the UK.

Amanda says, “Overgrooming is a real issue, and it becomes habitual, leaving many pet owners bereft, watching their cat lick themselves sore. I would urge any owner who may think their feline is displaying signs of overgrooming, beyond typical feline grooming, to seek help from a behaviourist registered with a professional body such as the APBC. With a few behavioural and environmental changes, it can be addressed. Just look at Yogi now!”

Research from Bella & Duke challenges gender stereotypes that cats are for women and big dogs are more masculine

Leading pet food and wellbeing company Bella & Duke are on a mission to debunk common misconceptions around pet ownership, nutrition and pet food labelling as well as breed cliches. The company conducted UK wide research unveiling gender stereotypes of pet owners, with 86% of people thinking chihuahua owners are more likely to be female and 72% feeling a rottweilers owner would be male. Nearly half (45%) believe a cat owner is a female, with 27% believing they are more likely to be single.

Bella & Duke champions species-appropriate and pet centred wellbeing, yet many still don’t realise the benefits of a raw diet versus more recent, and now considered more conventional pet foods such as kibble or tinned. Raw feeding is continuing to become a more popular option for pet owners, yet there are still many misconceptions around this natural diet that need to be challenged and Bella & Duke have set out to do just that.

Mark Scott, CEO at Bella & Duke, said: “Common pet misconceptions we see today like the ‘crazy old cat lady’ are often derived from the movies we consume or the books we read. Other key stats include:

  • 28% of people thought that larger dogs were higher maintenance pets than smaller dogs
  • 61% of those surveyed felt that too many people had pets for the wrong reasons
  • 26% believed that cats preferred to be left on their own

Despite pet owners wanting what is best for their furry friends, the research found that almost a quarter (24%) of Brits actually don’t know what type of food is the most nutritious for their pets whether its raw, wet food or kibble (dried food pellets).

Further to this, over a third (37%) were entirely unsure of what the legal requirement of meat that needs to be in meat-based foods, showing there is a lot of confusion when it comes to pet nutrition. Despite this confusion, over 40% of pet owners said they believe wellness claims made by pet food brands, which often show no supporting evidence of the proposed benefits.

Bella & Duke also found that some pet owners think raw feeding is inconvenient (17%). Top 10 States with the Highest Demand for Veterinarians and Animal Hospitals – Katzenworld

  • Analysis reveals Colorado has the highest demand for veterinarians and animal hospitals in America.
  • Michigan and West Virginia are in second and third place, respectively.
  • Hawaii is the state where vets are least in demand, with around 6,395 monthly Google searches, or just 444 searches per 100,000 residents.

A new study has revealed Colorado as the state where veterinarians are most in demand.

The analysis, undertaken by canine supplementation experts PetLab, looked at the number of Google searches for the ten most common search terms relating to animal hospitals and veterinarian care.

They then looked at the number of monthly searches in each state and compared it to population size in order to determine how many searches were made per 100,000 residents.

The results show that Colorado is the state where veterinarians are most in demand, with an average of 75,927 monthly vet-related searches, or the equivalent of 1,300 searches per 100,000 citizens.

Luckily, pet owners in The Centennial State don’t have to look far for vet care. According to a recent employment data report released in April by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 2,340 veterinarians employed in the state. That’s 40 vets for every 100,000 residents and the third-highest number of veterinarians in the nation.

Michigan ranks second as the state where veterinary services are most highly sought after. On average, 130,099 veterinarian-related searches are made per month in Michigan, equating to 1,297 searches per 100,000. According to recent BLS data, Michigan has 19 employed vets per 100,000 citizens.

Ranked third is West Virginia. The state’s 22,713 monthly Google searches means that for every 100,000 people living in The Mountain State, there are around 1,280 monthly vet-related searches.

Despite having a smaller population than the majority of states in the top ten, its residents demonstrate a substantial need for veterinary services. This finding may reflect the state’s rural nature and the critical role that both pets and working animals play in the lives of West Virginians.

North Carolina comes in fourth place, with 133,550 average monthly searches dedicated to veterinarian services, this is the equivalent of 1,248 searches per 100,000 people. The Old North State also had the highest number of searches out of the top ten for the term “vet near me.”

Arizona ranked fifth as the state where veterinarians are most in demand. Arizona sees around 91,063 Google searches for vets each month, which is around 1,237 searches per 100,000 people.

As a state known for its warm climate and outdoor lifestyle, pets are integral members of many Arizonan families. Cities like Sedona, Scottsdale, and Phoenix are well-regarded for their dog-friendly parks, hiking trails, pet-friendly restaurants, and businesses. This increased frequency of dog-friendly destinations could explain Arizona’s high demand for veterinary services.

Following the top five is Washington in sixth as the state where veterinary services are highly sought after, with 93,766 monthly Google searches on average, equating to 1,204 vet-related searches relative to 100,000 residents. Next on the list is Maine, ranking seventh with around 16,575 searches on average (1,197 searches per 100,000 people). Maine also had the highest searches in the top ten states for “emergency vet near me.”

Florida came eighth with 262,373 Google searches per month on average, or 1,180 people per 100,000 searching for vets each month.

Claiming the ninth spot is Utah, with 1,179 searches among 100,000 residents, and rounding out the top ten is South Carolina, with 1,154 searches per 100,000 residents.

Vet-AI Launches State-of-the-Art Digital First Vet Practice in London Colney Under Joii Pet Care Brand – Katzenworld

Vet-AI, one of the UK’s cutting edge veterinary technology companies, has opened its first state-of-the-art practice in London Colney as part of its drive to revolutionise veterinary care.

The ‘Digital First practice’ will be opened under the Joii Pet Care brand, the firm’s vet care digital app. It is a move that will create 13 new jobs and serve thousands of pets. The new practice will treat any pets that need physical care – expected to be around 30% of cases.

The London Colney practice will be modern and spacious with three consultation rooms. To ensure stress for pets is minimised, there will be no reception desk; instead all appointments will be booked and managed via the app.

Dr Robert Dawson RCVS, vet and co-founder of Joii Pet Care, said: “We’re really excited to be opening our initial ‘Digital First’ practice. Our ambition is to offer more options for affordable, convenient veterinary care to pet owners and I’m really pleased to welcome new staff members to our brilliant team to help us deliver the next step of our journey.

“We plan to open multiple practices in commuter areas of the UK which will serve high population density areas. London Colney is the first part of that wider expansion plan as we look to bring Joii Pet Care to more pet owners. We can support the local area with a vet practice as there are lots of pets, not enough vets. And with our technology, we can see more pets from home as well as in practice.”

Vet-AI has invested in leading technological equipment for the practice. This includes pet-level cameras in the waiting room which will be used to analyse the pets’ gait and body condition. All the diagnostic equipment, from lab machines to X-rays, will be fully integrated with patient records in Joii Pet Care. There are also plans to install technology which will allow pet parents to tailor their appointments around changing schedules in practice, keeping waiting times minimal and pets happier.

Technology in the ‘Digital First’ practice will integrate seamlessly with the Joii Pet Care app to give pet owners unparalleled management of their pets’ health. The app will track every step of a customer’s journey in practice, so all details are in one place – allowing pet owners to book and manage appointments via the app, where they can also track notes and access medical history.

As part of its mission to ensure vet care is affordable and convenient, Joii Pet Care will be offering free first video consultations for new customers to the London Colney practice.

Pet owners can download the Joii Pet Care app to get free access to the firm’s innovative online symptom checker. The veterinary designed symptom checker covers the vast majority of common presenting problems experienced by cats and dogs.

Data from the Joii Pet Care app in the last six months shows that 70% of issues have been solved while pet owners and their animals have remained in the comfort of their own home. The Joii Pet Care vets and vet nurses, who already provide a remote service to more than 330,000 pet owners through the app, will remain available 24/7, 365 days a year. Average wait times to see a vet via the app are less than 6 minutes.

Dr Dawson added: “We know that customers access services very differently now, and vet care is no different. There has been a real shift for the convenience of online options, which works brilliantly when there is an opportunity to visit in-person for an experience based on personal preferences and requirements.”

By joining a Digital First practice, customers can access vets 24/7 from £28 via the Joii Pet Care app with the advantage of also having affordable in-practice consultations on their doorstep. Joii Pet Care also partners with insurers including Animal Friends Insurance, Purely Pets, Waggel and Asda – giving customers free access to Joii Pet Care video calls with vets.
